You've recently been commended by SBCTC for your curriculum contribution to Guided Pathways. Can you describe your process and approach?

 

I was commended by John Kerr and Jeff Wagnitz of Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) for my design of our college’s Guided Pathways course, which transitions students from Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) to college-credit bearing courses at Big Bend Community College (BBCC). Both Kerr and Wagnitz would like to use the course I designed as a statewide model for BEdA programs, and possibly nationally. It was a great honor to be recognized. I’ve heard from our students that the course has given them more information about the programs offered at BBCC and has inspired them to take classes at BBCC to pursue their degrees. That makes me happy as that was the goal. Immediately upon arriving at BBCC in 2019, I was asked to create a course that introduced students to college and career readiness, while also focusing on guided pathways. I’m happy that the NAV 101: Guided Pathways course is meeting this expectation so well.

 

You have lived in so many places. Could you name a few and share how you prepared to live in other cultures?

 

In 2008, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines. It was my first time being out of North America and it was quite the shock. I later joined Peace Corps Ukraine and lived there for 27 months teaching English to future English teachers. Sadly, the town I once lived in is now under Russian occupation, but I have managed to still keep in touch with some of my students and my former Russian teacher. In 2012, I moved to China to teach children English. While abroad, I also had the opportunity to travel to South Korea, Italy, France, and the UK. Traveling is my passion and one I’ve missed during the pandemic. To prepare for living abroad, I researched and read as much as I could about the country, culture, languages, and people. Regardless, I always managed to be surprised by something. However, what never ceased to surprise me was that I would experience reverse culture shock when I return to the USA. Hearing English and being bombarded with American culture again always leaves me a little dizzy and fatigued for a few days as I adjust to being an American in America again.

 

Your Tik Tok account just passed 40K followers. First, congratulations. Second, how do you manage the research content for your videos?

 

Thank you! I joined TikTok as an outlet during the lockdown in 2020. I never expected that so many people from around the world would actually be interested in hearing what I have to say. Social activism became important to me at a young age, but even more so as I lived overseas and saw the human rights violations not only abroad but domestically, as well. My TikTok account focuses on teaching people about social issues around the world. Most of my topics come from current events - my main source is The New York Times. I also rely on The Washington Post and other prominent and reliable newspapers. One of the greatest aspects of social media is the human experience - we get the opportunity to learn how others live. I have learned more about Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color and their experiences than I ever learned from a history book. It reminds me of traveling and living abroad, without leaving my living room. Not only do I get the opportunity to educate others, but I am also a student, and for that I am truly grateful.

Do you have a set of "go to" journals, authors, blogs, databases, or websites you use to keep up to date in your field?  And also - as your field is inherently cross-disciplinary - anything else you use to keep intellectually tuned up?

 

As an instructor in Basic Education for Adults, I teach multiple subjects ranging from English, Science, History, and Health as students complete their high school education. To stay current, I read newspapers and magazines. Besides the New York Times, I like to read National Geographic, The Smithsonian Magazine, In These Times magazine, Ms. magazine, and Science News. I also watch documentaries to stay current. “Big Picture” with Kal Penn is a favorite documentary series. I just watched “Science Fair” by National Geographic on Disney+. I appreciated learning what innovations these young people have created, and I hope the information I was able to include in a recent lesson helps inspire my own students. 

 

​What book, poem, or study have you read that engaged you so deeply you were changed?

 

Reading is essential. I have always been a voracious reader. My favorite contemporary fiction author is Diana Gabaldon. I first read her Outlander series when I was 17-years-old, and it inspired me to want to become a writer myself. I appreciate that Gabaldon can tie in multiple characters and sensations, much like Hemmingway, but also make it engaging and interesting for the reader. I’m very excited that, after waiting seven years, the next book in Gabaldon’s series comes out on Nov. 23rd. I will spend my Thanksgiving break reading, I assure you. 

The poet that I would say had the biggest impact is Ted Kooser. I read his “Abandoned Farmhouse” in my creative writing class in 2004, and I instantly fell in love with his imagery and ability to evoke emotion in a reader. I then had to buy every book he’s ever released. I now read his poetry to my daughter. It was that 2004 creative writing class, and that instructor, that made me realize how much I love writing poetry, which I still do from time to time.

Yes. I read it.

I do find it odd that some people do not find the American
Psychological Association Manual of Style 7th edition as exciting as I do.
It took ten years to come out.

The old version just sat there as social media happened,
blogs sort of unhappened and rebecame, eBooks eBooked, and
you don't know the fights I had about what to do about a journal
article without a DOI. 

It was buried on page 131 or 7 of the 6th edition. I used
to charge people with the book open like a heretic of order and documentation.

"What?...You can't handle the truth?" I'd say throwing my hands up in the air and stomping off full of knowledge.

But it was old knowledge. It was old ways.

See, we all have change come at us. It is there, wisdom
lets us take in a new way.

Ebsco says: Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection is an essential full-text database for psychologists, counselors, researchers and students. It provides hundreds of full-text psychology journals, including many indexed in PsycINFO. It offers particularly strong coverage in child and adolescent psychology and counseling.

 

We just bought this EBSCO database a few months ago and already it is number two on our most used databases on our Databases A-Z list.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences allows the selection of full text, peer-reviewed, and date-specific limiters.

When you type in a search term, the database suggests more focused searches and searches using Boolean Logic.

Do you remember the precise moment, book, or class that cognitive learning captivated you?

I have always really loved learning about the science of just about anything: the science of habit formation, the science of willpower, the science of memory, etc.  I love to know the “why?” and the “how do we know that?” about things. My favorite things to read tend to be along these lines: "The Science of..." books.  And of course, as a teacher, I have always been interested and in love with learning. The precise moment when I realized that I could merge those two interests into one passion was when I read Teach Students How to Learn by Saundra McGuire.  It really inspired me to want to become a resource for students and faculty on learning and I have been captivated ever since. 

 

In your educational research, you have found frustration to be more of a happy place than how many of us might describe frustration.  What advice do you have for learners that hit that wall?

 

Oh heavens, I hate being frustrated and I have had to come a LONG WAY in this.  In the past, my tolerance for mistakes and frustration was pretty low; it did not take much struggle before I was devastated, probably in tears, and convinced that I couldn't do it and never would. If I stuck with it, I eventually would see progress and feel better and keep going. I've experienced this "despair/elation" cycle enough to realize that the messy "middle act" is part of my journey and I have to accept it and walk through it to get to the part that feels good again.  I also read Mindset by Carol Dweck and had to really face the way my mindset and fear of failure were limiting me and also making me rather miserable and obnoxious.

My advice for learners (which is all of us) is going to sound pretty Pollyanna-ish, but I mean it with every atom in my body.  (It's also research-based too, of course!):

Remember that mistakes, frustration, and struggle are an absolutely critical part of the learning process.  It’s the messy, middle act. They mean you are trying, that you are challenging yourself, and it is frustration that triggers the brain to engage in the hard work of long-term learning. Frustration means you are on the right track.

  • Watch your self-talk; do not let the mean voice in your head have a megaphone; remember to argue against it.  Only talk to yourself the way you would to a friend in a similar situation.
  • Give yourself permission to make mistakes and not be perfect.  Let go of your 4.0 and focus on learning.  I mean this.  Write yourself a literal permission slip if you have to.
  • When the frustration feels too big, take a break.  Go for a walk, do some mindfulness etc.  Frustration can lead to cognitive tunnel-vision, which can block the creative process.  Step away and do something else for a while. 

 

What is something people are surprised to learn about you?

Probably that I really struggle with imposter syndrome sometimes, with the deep-down feeling like I do not belong here; that I am a fraud, a charlatan, that has tricked everyone into thinking that I am intelligent, that I know things, that I am a good teacher; and the fear then that someday people will figure it out.  I’ll do or say something, fail at some project, and everyone will suddenly realize the truth: that I am just a country bumpkin who received free lunch in school and never really left her hometown, who pretends to know things but actually just knows a few things and says them with confidence, who is embarrassingly directionally challenged, cannot remember names to save her life, and really isn’t that special after all.

However, I believe in the importance of wrestling with our demons, naming our struggles, and removing their power by confessing them out loud; and so while I do scuffle with these feelings often, they are not currently winning or defining me.  One of my favorite quotes of all time (which I have framed in my office as a reminder) is from the author Neil Gaiman:

"Some years ago, I was lucky enough invited to a gathering of great and good people: artists and scientists, writers and discoverers of things.  And I felt that at any moment they would realize that I didn’t qualify to be there, among these people who had really done things.

On my second or third night there, I was standing at the back of the hall, while a musical entertainment happened, and I started talking to a very nice, polite, elderly gentleman about several things, including our shared first name. And then he pointed to the hall of people, and said words to the effect of, “I just look at all these people, and I think, what the heck am I doing here? They’ve made amazing things. I just went where I was sent.”

And I said, “Yes. But you were the first man on the moon. I think that counts for something.”

And I felt a bit better. Because if Neil Armstrong felt like an imposter, maybe everyone did. Maybe there weren’t any grown-ups, only people who had worked hard and also got lucky and were slightly out of their depth, all of us doing the best job we could, which is all we can really hope for.
