Display Multiple Links for CDI

The ability to display both link-to-source and link resolver links for a citation in Primo VE is now live.

This ability can be enabled by editing the Primo VE view and enabling Display all links in View Online section on the General tab.

For details about customizing labels associated with this feature, see the Primo VE Release notes:

Podcast about Spotify (from Oddlots, Bloomberg): Odd Lots: The Real Reason So Many Musicians Are Frustrated By Spotify on Apple Podcasts

This podcast discusses some interesting aspects of Spotify from the content creator's perspective. It isn't directly related to libraries, but it is an example of how vendor practices on the content management side can impact content usage patterns on the consumer side. And also makes me wonder about what models library content vendors use to pay content originators, in cases for the library vendor doesn't actually own the content.

Swank: One the question of how to account for an 'available thru' date for individual portfolios, here is one workaround described by posting on Alma-L:

As a less-than-ideal workaround, assuming your portfolio doesn't have coverage dates, you could enter an end coverage date and use it as an active until date. This will be visible to users in Primo, but that might be ok or even desirable, if you want your users to know when access will end. This is what we do for streaming video titles that are leased for a limited period of time. We only do this for streaming video, which normally don't have coverage dates, so it works ok for us, and I made an Analytics report showing all our streaming video portfolios and their coverage dates that we use to see which portfolios are expiring soon.

I know this is hacky, so feel free to disregard this if it won't work for your situation, but I thought I'd share it in case it could be helpful!

Physical Circulation during and post- COVID

It's clear from casual browsing of the IPEDS dashboard at any institution that physical circulation has experienced a very large decline since the beginning of COVID. From a longer-term, library strategic planning perspective, it's worth considering whether physical circulation will return to prepandemic levels.

In somewhat related news, Big Bend Community College will be closing its physical bookstore, another indication of decreasing demand for content in physical form.

From Linda Garcia (LCC Library) to Everyone:  10:03 AM
Morning!
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:03 AM
Yo
From Lily Kun (SPSCC) to Everyone:  10:03 AM
Good morning!
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:12 AM
Good experiment for a summer break period
I can just envision students asking which link is correct
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:12 AM
They already do that with multiple links...
From Lily Kun (SPSCC) to Everyone:  10:12 AM
They usually just click on the first link...
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:12 AM
This screenshot is making me want to annotate our service links more though
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:13 AM
I'm liking the public note that appears for DOAJ in the example screenshot
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:13 AM
Would want to think a lot about order of appearance of the available databases, if the direct link from a results list automatically takes you to the first option on the list?
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:13 AM
We haven't done any big work on Primo displays since right when the pandemic hit and we integrated chat reference there
From Jennifer Rohan to Everyone:  10:15 AM
I find this interesting/helpful as a librarian, but it is a lot of text for users to read (and likely they really only care if they can get full text rather than knowing the entity it comes from)
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:16 AM
I agree, Jennifer.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:16 AM
Agree, I think seeing things about "CDI" and "Alma Link Resolver" might confuse students.
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:17 AM
Is it possible to change the "CDI" and "Alma Link Resolver" labels?
"Direct link" and "Try these if the direct link doesn;t work" ;)
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:17 AM
If there's not a label for it in Alma's configuration menu, I bet we could change that text using a customization. We did it back in the old pre-VE days where label customizations were more trouble than they were worth
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:22 AM
Oh! I didn't realize that was Radka's position!
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:22 AM
Same
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:22 AM
I thought it might be Kitty's position
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:23 AM
I remember Radka bring a box with a sign on it that said something like "Radka's portable standing desk" to Orbis meetings and it was so neat to see
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:26 AM
So many folks think of libraries as a big box of books
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:26 AM
We only have 42% of students verifying their vaccination status so far, and allowed to be on campus.  So our book circulation is obviously low, even with being willing to still do curbside pickup.  Might pick up if the vaccination mandate goes away?
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:27 AM
Even before COVID, +/- 60% of our circ stats were from a combination of equipment and Reserves textbook vorrowing
"borrowing"
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:28 AM
Yeah our borrows are heavy majority tech right now
we circed a bunch of books yesterday only because ELA teachers brought classes around and told them they had to check out one book
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:29 AM
That's one way to boost circ, ha ha!
There are a lot of books that aren't available to be licensed as ebooks by libraries.  And one book I looked into last week was $54 for print of $740 for single user ebook ($950 for 3 users)
*or
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:31 AM
That's the big problem we're running into with videos instructors want to show in class-- DVDs are $10-20 but no one has players. Streaming video of the same thing is 3 figures-- for a 1 year license!!!
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:31 AM
+1 Kirsti
Related - in June, Kanopy is supposedly coming out with a new access model that will "blow AVON out of the water" (rep's words)
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:31 AM
+ another Kirsti
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:32 AM
We have the same issue with streaming video. We see more demand for streaming video than we do for ebooks. In fact, we get a surprising number students asking for print over ebooks. But, that might also be because faculty in our basic skills department are requiring recreational reading and those students seem to prefer physical books.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:35 AM
@Dan I'm skeptical of Kanopy!
We have a "Flex" plan with Swank where we can have either 50 or 75 titles in our portal at any one time, but we can "swap" titles out as needed.  It's not cheap but it works the best so far for us.  It DOES take a lot of my time to keep titles that everyone needs, by the dates they need them.
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:36 AM
Bandcamp pays more directly to the bands and artists than Spotify does.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:38 AM
Did Big Bend have an internal bookstore or was it managed by B&N or Follett?
From Naoko Yasuda to Everyone:  10:39 AM
Amy, do you add Swank titles to Alma? I've been asked to do this but I'm not excited about having to keep track of subscription start/end dates for each title.
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:39 AM
Our BC bookstore was just taken over by Follett
From Laurie Shuster (she/her) Pierce College to Everyone:  10:39 AM
Pierce College bookstore moved to B&N about 5-ish years ago. Was run internally before.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:40 AM
Ours was contracted by B&N a few years ago. They asked for renegotiation for the college to take a lesser percentage of profit than originally negotiated.
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:40 AM
Naoko- Paula creates records for SWANK titles and adds a note about when they expire. She could tell you more
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:40 AM
@Naoko-- Check with George Babcock too. I think Seattle Central is using Swank (at least I know they did earlier in the pandemic)
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:40 AM
I don't know how the physical space is handled in the contract. We were not allowed input on the contract before it was signed.
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:40 AM
@Nicole Look at the contract details about limitations related to OER. Some place a lot of restrictions, while bringing users into their OER-enhanced platforms.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:41 AM
Naoko, yes I do since it's such a small number of titles.  It's really easy.
From Laurie Shuster (she/her) Pierce College to Everyone:  10:41 AM
I'm not sure how the B&N contract works at Pierce.
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:42 AM
@Ryer- we are not happy with the bookstore change. I don't know about OER, we have an OER librarian who would look at that
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:42 AM
We had some textbook lending programs that I had to run by my boss (Vice Chancellor of Student Success) to make sure they didn't run afowl of the B&N bookstore contract.
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:44 AM
We keep the records but suppress them when not active. Some carry over some don't
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:44 AM
That makes sense Amy
From Naoko Yasuda to Everyone:  10:44 AM
Thank you for sharing!
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:45 AM
I guess my advice is to get familiar with pts of the contract that intersect with library work (OER/textbook lending/etc), then work towards eventually making contract changes that help everyone do what they need.
From Naoko Yasuda to Everyone:  10:45 AM
Yes, it does Amy.
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:50 AM
I do that sort of upload for other collections and it is super easy. SWANK Paula use WorldCat records
SWANK and Disney is a challenge. You can only access via a direct link
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:50 AM
Interesting that SWANK limits promotion. What's an example of a type of promotion that is not allowed? Just curious.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:51 AM
Our B&N management of the bookstore has been problematic.  They do things like stick extra things like binders and supplies in the list of books in the textbook lookup tool, and make it look like they are required.  They also really push their $10/mo Bartlby product which is essentially a papermill/textbook answer service.
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:52 AM
I’ve also heard negatives about the B&N running of college bookstores, especially if you want to promote OER...
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:52 AM
@Amy yuck, that doesn't sound good at all.
From Amy Herman, Library Faculty to Everyone:  10:53 AM
@Ryer: "Licensee shall only publicize the availability of Swank specifically related to the Purpose via regular classroom announcements or via its campus library webpage or branded social media platforms. Promoting the availability of individual movies shall be limited to the library catalog, learning management system and typical classroom announcements as needed for the Purpose. Advertising the general availability of the Titles through public media such as radio, television, newspaper or Internet (beyond the University’s website and branded social media platforms) is strictly prohibited.”
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:53 AM
Ipeds, yep.
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:53 AM
Yup
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:53 AM
I think so
From Laurie Shuster (she/her) Pierce College to Everyone:  10:54 AM
Yes - Lesley and our team did before she moved on.  Phew!
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:55 AM
Thanks @Amy Interesting
Laughing at "The Purpose"
From Nicole Longpre to Everyone:  10:56 AM
I need to head out. See you next week
From Elena Bianco to Everyone:  10:56 AM
Thanks, all!
From Jennifer Rohan to Everyone:  10:56 AM
thanks
From Ryer Banta to Everyone:  10:56 AM
Thanks all
From Dan Moore to Everyone:  10:56 AM
