Discussions

Shelf Inventory

Traci Taylor, Bellingham Technical College, discussed her recent experience setting up a shelf inventory method developed at Chemeketa Community College, Oregon.

We also discussed a couple of other methods of performing shelf inventories, including an API-based method developed by Purdue University, which I have adapted for use by WACTCLC libraries.

We also discussed the out-of-the-box Alma Shelf Reporting tool, which does have a disadvantage of not reporting on out-of-order items.

Following the meeting, I created an Inventory Tools page on this web site, with descriptions of these inventory methods, and links to additional resources.

Credo Academic Core and CDI linking

Elena Bianco, Skagit Valley College, has reported via SalesForce an issue with links from CDI citations to Credo Academic Core content.

For now, this is just an FYI for those that maintain a subscription to Credo content.

But if the issue proves to be pervasive across a lot of Credo content, I will make a recommendation to disable CDI linking for Credo collections until the issue is resolved.

EBSCOhost eBook Open Access

This topic actually came up in the Thursday call.

Laura Staley, Renton Technical College, reported that an Alma Community Zone collection is now available for the recently announced Ebsco eBook Open Access Collection.

The CZ collection can be found as:

EBSCOhost eBook Open Access

Collection ID: 615470000000000411

I walk the stacks and pull things that look old or questionable. Then I run the pulled books through RCL and do a little more research on them (use stats, etc.) before making final decision.

I've got notes and procedures from when we used this program in 2017, if anyone would like to see them.

Our barcodes are on outside, back cover
From Laura Staley_Library to Everyone:  10:32 AM
Ours are outside, back cover too.
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:34 AM
We do outside front cover with the barcode running vertically-- as recommended by Dale Burke :)

The other inventory session I was talking about is called, Inventorying Library Collections: Tips and Tricks. It was at the ELUNA 2018 conference, in Spokane. I have a couple of pages of notes. I will see if there is a PPT.
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:36 AM
Dale pointed out if you place the barcode vertically on the front or back cover, you can just tilt the book out a bit from the shelf/cart to scan the barcode.
From Traci Taylor (BTC) to Everyone:  10:36 AM
Presenter was, Stuart Gaetjens, from Tennessee Tech University.
From Kirsti Thomas (Seattle Colleges) to Everyone:  10:37 AM
We buy "barcode protectors" from Demco/Brodart to put over the barcodes to keep them from peeling off.
Traci-- Thanks for sharing this!

From Laura Staley_Library to Everyone:  10:45 AM
Yes. And it was a Gale product.
From Cara Beth - Grays Harbor to Everyone:  10:49 AM
I don't think Credo is part of Gale
easy enough to do
