"For self care...here is a poem I wrote over six years ago after my then three-year-old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes."
From chubby fingers
Uncurled from beneath pink froggy jammies
n the midnight hours
To wax and wane maternal worry
Come these crimson drops on the pillowcase
We practice a new dialect
A language more suited for the clinic than the kitchen
The epithets of the endocrine
Until they no longer sticks to our tongue
But spill easily into our everyday
Like crimson drops on the pillowcase
In time the chaos focuses
As life anchors to a new center
We treat and eat; test and correct
And embrace the failure and uncertainty that have wormed their way into our days
As the world spins on in ignorance of
Our crimson drops on the pillowcase
