Words

Words.

Once so important, once so essential.

Once the core of my being.

Once the answer to my triumphs and woes. My victories and worries. My highs and lows.

Once the part of me that made me who I am.

Once words meant everything.

Now mean nothing.

Dead.

Your words have killed my own.

This death of words is a tragedy.

You used words to coax and woo me;

to gentle me.

You used words to seduce and play me.

You used words.

You used words.

You used me.

These words that dripped from your lips like honey, only

to burn and poison me later.

Your lies were so easy for you to say;

so easy for me to believe.

Your words have left splintered fragments of trust

throughout my heart.

Your words have broken me.

But not destroyed me.-

J.D. Strickland, April 2019
