Without alternative text, a blind person who is using a screen reader will not be able to access the content of important images. The screen reader will just say “graphic”. Canvas offers the option to add alternative text or mark the image as decorative.

• Add description and function.
• Do not include the words “image of” or “picture of," as the screen reader will already tag it as an image or graphic.
• Do not Wrap Text around an image, as the screen reader will skip over the image.

To make images accessible in Canvas page:

1. Select the image
2. Select the pop-up window "image options"
3. Select decorative or add a detailed description

To create alt-ext in Word:

1. To add alt text to a picture, shape, chart, or SmartArt graphic, do one of the following:

   • Right-click the object and select Edit Alt Text....

   • Select the object. Select Format > Alt Text.

   The Alt Text pane opens.

2. Type a detailed description of the image to someone who cannot see the image, and describe why the image is important to your message.

3. Since assistive technology doesn’t read words within images, if there’s text within your image, include that text in the alt text description.
