Using Canvas at BBCC - for faculty

Make Accessible PDFs

PDFs

Accessible PDFs are designed to work with assistive technology, such as screen readers, text-to-speech programs, and braille displays:

  1. Download the pdf or work with the original.
  2. Open the PDF in Acrobat
  3. Menu at top left
  4. Scroll down to Document Properties
  5. Description Tab, Add a title, subject, and author (at least title)
  6. Advanced Tab, set the document language
  7. Okay
  8. Select All tools > Prepare for accessibility
  9. Select Automatically tag PDF
  10. Review the tags, make sure your doc has a Heading 1 tag <H1> for the document, and that Tables have a Header row or column at minimum (see more below in Tables section)
  11. Add Alternate text
  12. Save.
  13. Upload the remediated file using the Ally Tool Browse, or Drag and Drop.
