Word docs
The Microsoft Word Accessibility Checker does not flag docs without Headings as an accessibility issue, but it is an accessibility issue, none the less.
- Download the file or use the original.
- Open the Word doc.
- If the file type is still a .doc, Save As a .docx
- On Home tab, Select Review>Check Accessibility
- Follow prompts/drop downs in the Accessibility window for each item
Add Headings to your Word document:
Faculty often choose Styles by what size and font they wish to use. Instead, use them for structure, consistency, and navigation. For Accessibility, Screenreaders use the Headings as navigation tools to jump to different sections of the document using the Headings as anchors, so they need to be in a logical order. Heading 1, then Heading 2, Heading 3, etc. Visit Headings for more info
- Highlight the words you wish to designate a Heading, for example, the Title at the top of the page should be designated as Heading 1
- Right-click the highlighted portion (the small edit window should pop up)
- Select Styles and right-click on Heading 1 to choose Update Heading 1 to Match Selection
- Follow these steps to create more Headings (Heading 2, Heading 3) if needed for longer documents
